Editorial Policy and How We Research Costs
Every guide on CostPilotUSA follows the same process, so you can judge how much to trust a number before you rely on it.
1. We start from the decision, not the keyword
Each guide is built around a decision a homeowner has to make: hire or wait, repair or replace, this material or that one, sign or push back. If a topic does not lead to a decision, we do not publish it.
2. Where our cost numbers come from
- Labor: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data for each trade, adjusted for overhead and profit
- Materials: manufacturer documentation and published price lists
- Energy costs: U.S. Energy Information Administration price data
- Rules and permits: state licensing boards, building departments and federal agencies
- Insurance: insurer, regulator and industry publications
- Industry studies: published remodeling and construction cost research
When sources disagree, we show the range and explain why they differ. We never present a single number as the price of a job.
3. How ranges are built
Low, typical and high ranges describe the same job done in different conditions: size, access, material grade, local labor rates and what is hidden behind walls or under shingles. Each guide names the factors that move a job from one end to the other.
4. Review and updates
Guides carry a "last updated" date. Prices are reviewed at least once a year and whenever a major change happens, such as a tax credit ending, a new code rule, a refrigerant change or tariffs that move material prices. Guides that touch taxes, loans or insurance are reviewed when the underlying rules change.
5. Independence
We do not accept payment to include, rank or recommend a contractor, product or lender. Advertising is shown by ad networks and is kept separate from editorial content. Any sponsored content is labeled clearly as sponsored. See advertise with us for our sponsorship rules.
6. Use of tools
We use software tools, including drafting and calculation tools, to help research and organize information. Every published guide is reviewed and edited before it goes live, and figures are checked against the sources listed at the end of the guide.
7. Corrections
If you find an error, write to us through the contact page. We fix confirmed errors quickly and note material corrections on the guide.
